Sustainable Design Comes to Life at the Mosaic Centre for Conscious Community & Commerce

Edmonton, AB

Glulam was the preferred choice for the earth's northernmost net-zero energy commercial building, meeting stringent building challenges while providing a beautiful interior look. The Mosaic Centre is a LEED Platinum certified building, which is the highest level of recognition for environmental stewardship on a construction project.

The Mosaic Centre is home to priMED, EcoAmmo, The Workshop Eatery, and Seeds and Sprouts Daycare. This building is a bright, fresh-air, positive energy environment designed to help occupants feel happy and inspired at work. After a feasibility analysis, wood construction was favoured to meet all building science challenges, and provide an enhanced interior work environment. Douglas Fir Glulam is featured throughout the building, including Westdek decking, glulam post-and-beam frames, and glulam trusses. Mosaic Centre also features a glulam floor structure, making it one of the first projects to utilize Westdek as a floor application. Nearly all of the wood scraps accumulated during construction were reused for benches, desks, washroom vanities, partitions, planters, and interior art. The carbon benefit of the wood structure is equivalent to the energy needed to operate a home for 121 years.
