Appleton International Airport Expansion (ATW)
Appleton International Airport renovated its terminal with a focus on sustainability, future growth, and traveler well-being. The design added amenities like a living wall, nursing room, community spaces, and durable finishes to enhance the passenger experience.
Appleton International Airport (ATW) completed a major renovation of its commercial terminal to improve the passenger experience and prepare for future growth. The 4,366-square-meter, single-story facility was built using mass timber, specifically glue-laminated timber (glulam), which provided both strength and design flexibility. Working with Mead & Hunt and Miron Construction, Western Archrib supplied glulam that supported the terminal’s open, community-oriented design while aligning with the airport’s sustainability plan.
Glulam was key in achieving a cohesive architectural feel that balances durability with warmth, helping create spaces such as the reception lobby, restaurant, and retail areas. Additional features—like a living wall to reduce passenger stress, a nursing room, and bottle-filling water stations—underscore the project’s focus on wellness and community health. With timeless, low-maintenance finishes and structural adaptability, including space for a future security lane, ATW’s expanded terminal demonstrates how glulam can shape sustainable, people-centered transportation infrastructure.
