SQUAMISH LIL'WAT CULTURAL CENTRE

Whistler, British Columbia

Celebrating the culture of two proud First Nations peoples, the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre symbolizes the spirit of unity. The overall design pays homage to the traditional longhouses and Istkens (pithouses) that once graced Canada's rugged west coast. Careful consideration was given to the selection of building materials, including the use of Glulam columns instead of solid wood posts, to honour the belief that the Squamish and Lil'wat nations are stewards of the land.

  • The project received LEED® Gold certification for features such as radiant floor heating and the use of recycled materials.
  • A green roof, covering 20% of the building, was planted using native species to replace the vegetation displaced by the structure.
